Search for window rebates in Ontario and you will find two very different things sitting side by side: a small number of real programs with real eligibility rules, and a large number of pages designed to look like government programs so somebody can sell you windows.
People ask us constantly whether window replacement grants are real. Some are. Here is how to tell which, and what to do before you sign anything.
How Real Programs Behave
Legitimate efficiency programs in Canada share a set of traits. They are administered by a government body or a regulated utility. They require an energy assessment before work begins, not after. They pay after the work is verified, rather than being handed to a contractor as a discount. They never phone you unprompted, and they never require you to choose a particular installer.
Above all, a real program is documented on a government or utility domain that you reached yourself, not through a link in an ad.
Where Windows Actually Fit
The important thing to understand is that windows are rarely the headline item in Canadian efficiency programs. Funding tends to concentrate on heat pumps, insulation and air sealing, because those deliver more energy saved per dollar. Windows usually appear as a smaller supporting measure, often capped per opening and often conditional on the home meeting an overall improvement target.
That means the realistic expectation is a contribution toward the project rather than a program that pays for your windows. Anyone implying otherwise is selling something.
The Four Places Worth Checking
Federal programs. Natural Resources Canada is the authority on what federal retrofit funding exists at any given time. Program names and budgets change, and intakes open and close, so check the current status directly on the NRCan site rather than relying on an article, including this one.
Your utility. Enbridge and the electricity utilities run their own efficiency incentives, and these are the ones most homeowners overlook. They are typically tied to a home energy assessment and to hitting a measured improvement.
Your municipality. Some Ontario municipalities run local home energy loan or improvement programs. These are small and easy to miss because they are not advertised widely.
Low income and senior specific programs. Separate streams exist for income qualified households and these are frequently far more generous than the general programs, sometimes covering the full cost. If you or a family member might qualify, this is the first place to look rather than the last.
How to Spot the Fakes
The pattern is consistent once you know it.
- An unsolicited call, text or door knock about a government window program.
- Urgency language: the grant closes this week, only a few spots left in your postal code.
- A requirement to use one specific installer to qualify.
- A pre-assessment done by the same company that will sell you the windows.
- A price that is inflated and then discounted by the exact amount of the claimed grant, so the rebate is simply built into the quote.
- A domain that mimics a government site without being one.
The last one is the most common and the most effective. Real programs live on official domains. If you did not navigate there yourself, treat it as advertising.
Do Windows Qualify for a Tax Credit
This question comes up almost as often. In general, replacing windows on your own principal residence is not a deductible expense in Canada. There are narrow exceptions worth knowing: accessibility related renovations for seniors or people with disabilities may qualify under specific credits, and windows on a rental property fall under different rules where the work may be treated as a capital expense. Both are questions for an accountant rather than a window company, and anyone promising you a tax write off as a sales point is out of their depth.
